Why Your Amaryllis Won’t Bloom (and How to Fix It)

An amaryllis that grows leaves but never flowers is not broken. It is usually telling you something about light, feeding, pot size or the bulb itself.

1. Not enough light

Amaryllis needs the brightest spot in the house while it is growing. A north-facing windowsill, or a spot three feet back from a window, gives you leaves and nothing else. Move it to a south- or west-facing window as soon as the shoot appears.

2. The bulb was too small

Only top-size bulbs flower in their first year. Cheap bulbs sold as “amaryllis” are often two or three years short of flowering size, and no amount of care will speed that up. Buy graded bulbs and check the circumference — 30 cm and up is flowering size.

3. It was overwatered

A soft, discoloured bulb has rotted. Amaryllis stores water in the bulb, so it needs very little until the shoot is up. Water once at planting, then wait for the green nose before watering again.

4. The pot was too big

This surprises people: amaryllis flowers best when it is slightly pot-bound. A pot 1–2 inches wider than the bulb is right. In a big pot the roots keep growing and the plant puts its energy into roots rather than flowers.

If it flowered last year and not this year

The bulb has run out of energy. After flowering, cut only the spent stem and keep the leaves in full sun, watering and feeding every two weeks through summer. Those leaves rebuild the bulb for next winter. Cutting them off early is the most common reason a second-year amaryllis never blooms again.

Quick checklist

  • Bright light from the moment the shoot appears
  • Pot only slightly wider than the bulb
  • Water only when the top inch of compost is dry
  • Feed through summer, not during flowering
  • Leave the leaves on after flowering
